The Nikkei 225 (日経平均株価, Nikkei heikin kabuka), more commonly called the Nikkei, the Nikkei index, or the Nikkei Stock Average (/ ˈ n ɪ k eɪ, ˈ n iː-, n ɪ ˈ k eɪ /), is a stock market index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE). It has been calculated daily by the Nihon Keizai Shinbun (The Nikkei) newspaper since 1950. Japans Nikkei index measures the performance of 225 large stocks of companies in a wide range of industries. It's part of the TSE or Tokyo Stock Exchange. The Nikkei 225 was born on September 7th 1950, and was retroactively calculated back to May 1949. If you were to compare it to a US exchange, it would be best comparable to the DOW.
