A share represents a unit of ownership in a particular company. The investor in the example above owns shares in company X, and in company Y, and in company Z. He or she might own one or more shares from each individual company. Stock on the other hand refers to the overall number of shares owned. The key difference between stock and shares is that stock is the broad term which is used more generally to represent the ownership of a person in one or more than one companies in the market, whereas, the term share in comparatively a narrow term which is used to represent the ownership of a person in a particular single company in the market. A person holding stocks can be owner in one or many companies. Both shares and stocks are traded through stock exchanges where they can be sold or bought.
